What Do You Do When Life Throws You Oranges

You make orange marmalade...

candied orange peel and orange shortbread cookies!

A friend of ours found loads of oranges behind a local grocery store in town, they were throwing them out. The oranges were perfectly fine. I don't know how many total pounds he picked up, but he gave us about 15 or 20 pounds of them.

I thought O my gosh, what am I gonna do with all these oranges. I didn't want to turn it all into orange juice so I got on-line. I found a recipe for orange marmalade at Cooking with Amy, which was perfect for two reasons; 1) as she described, it is more a formula than a recipe and 2) the ingredients were simple. Then after squeezing some for juice, I thought... candied orange peel. I got on-line again and found a recipe for candied orange peel by Jen at "use real butter". Then I thought what am I gonna do with all this candied orange peel... I got on-line again and Jen at "use real butter" also had a recipe for Chocolate-Dipped Orange Peel Cookies which are really good. I hope you take time to visit these two blog sites, their recipes and pictures are awesome!

Needless to say, with all the squeezing, slicing, boiling and baking going on, my house smelled absolutely heavenly for several days.

  3. I did the same thing once when given a load of oranges! The marmalade was a big hit with my father-in-law, as I remember. What a lovely jar of marmalade you've got there.

And thank you so much for commenting on my blog. However did you find me?

  4. Wow, those are beautiful. And such nice presentation. I've never gotten the hang of presentation. (See my recent post on an eggplant dish if you doubt this...) Thanks for the recipe links and the photos!
